INTRO TO 3D ART

PROJECT 1

Create a list of 5 random objects. Arrange them into a dynamic composition, highlighting contrast and repetition, without cropping or grounding any items. Pencil drawing on paper.

For this project, I had a feeling that I was going to struggle with reaching a high enough level of contrast. I attempted to create depth through overlapping, foreshortening, detail (more detail on closer items and fewer details on those receding into background), and shading. I wanted to draw the eye of the viewer down and to the right corner, following the curve of the antler, while a focal point I had in mind was the iPod.

Lateral Thinking

I chose five objects each for five categories of objects.

Things on My Desk

  • Bull Statue
  • Concrete Head
  • Antler
  • Hair Oil
  • Deck of Cards

Electronics

  • Switch
  • Calculator
  • Laptop
  • Iphone
  • Ipod

Florist Supplies

  • Bonsai Shears
  • Floral Frog
  • Floral Wire
  • Gloves
  • Quick Dip

Hats

  • Party Hat
  • Bridal Veil
  • Motorcycle Helmet
  • Yarmulka
  • Cheese Head

Good Luck Symbols

  • Four Leaf Clover
  • Horseshoe
  • Acorn
  • Rabbit’s Foot
  • Penny

After creating these lists, I chose one object from each category to create 3 new groups of five objects.

List 1: Bull, Calculator, Gloves, Motorcycle Helmet, Rabbit’s Foot

List 2: Concrete Head, Laptop, Floral Wire, Party Hat, Clovers

List 3: Antler, Ipod, Shears, Bridal Veil, Clovers

Sketches

Sketch 1

I liked the angle of the Ipod and the lines of the earbuds at the bottom of the page, as well as the clovers in receding size along the side. However, I felt that the antler and veil were confusing and that the angle of the shears was unpleasant to look at.

Sketch 2

This antler shape was the most unique, and I enjoyed the way the earbuds wrapped around it, but the veil draped over top of the antler was distracting and confusing.

Sketch 3

I liked the angles of this sketch, with everything coming toward the viewer, but I found it to be less interesting in the way it was arranged across the page. I did decide to use the overlapping and foreshortening of the clovers in my final piece.

Chosen Sketch

I used this general composition in my final drawing.
